Sixth Sense (1999)
June 29th, 2009
The line, “I see dead people”, was spoken by a gifted young boy who sees dead people whom Malcolm Crowe (Bruce Willis) a child psychologist is bent on saving from a killer whom the boy is a witness to. The line was spoken by the boy when he tells Malcolm of his problem and he says he’s a freak. The movie was intended by Shaylaman to be a cross of the Exorcist and Ordinary People, both stories of the extra-ordinary events of ghosts and other super-natural beings. Malcolm continues to help the boy through his illness as he fails to realize that he too is already dead and is same as the other ghosts the boy sees. In the end, he remembers the whole story of him being shot and killed by the man whom he is protecting the boy from.

These types of films spurred a lot of imagination regarding space and beyond. Movies that were in fact produced in the height of huge interest in the exploration of space and the universe as a whole. ET the movie with an alien who was left behind and grew homesick left us with “ET Phone Home”. And the recently ended 6-part saga that was Star Wars, “May the force be with you” and “Use the force…Use the force” still transcends all ages and continues to be used as everyday phrases. These films spurred the minds and hearts of many space explorers who as we all know have been interested since their childhood and thanks in part to the sci-fi films of their time.

The classic movies of the many cowboy movies played by legendary actors like Clark Gable who spoke the ever loved quote, “Frankly My Dear, I don’t give a damn’” and Casablanca’s, “Here’s looking at you kid”. Many a film quotes became synonymous and great as the films themselves. Another legendary film, The Wizard of Oz had, “Theres no place like home.”
These quotes found a place in popular culture and became synonymous with love, hate and romance that the film showcased. The Godfather’s, “I’ll Make him an offer he can’t refuse”, became a gangster type lingo that remains to this day. All these films gave impacted and given us the beloved quotes we love to use in our own little ways to make us part of the nostalgia that was the golden years of the movie industry.
Rags to riches

Even when you think of classical takes on this concept, you’ll probably be hard-pressed to find a movie as engaging as Slumdog Millionaire. Slumdog Millionaire revolves around the life of Jamal Malik, an orphan from the shantytown in Mumbai who pursued the love of his life, found her after many years, and won 20 million rupees in India’s version of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire.

It’s a well presented movie – not once do you fell like you’re watching something trite or old. It’s so good, and the Academy agrees – awarding it with Picture of the Year in the 2009 Oscars While the film is British-made, there is an undeniable air of Bollywood around it – after all, the story IS about Indians and is set in India, so it should feel like one – to which the classic dance scene at the end serves as the perfect cap off to such cinematic excellence.
“Take Me to Your Leader” – Aliens Galore
January 28th, 2009
The phrase is a stereotypical phrase that has been used when it comes to aliens and any other matter that concerns them. Though the true origins of the words is totally unknown, there have been early references to such phrases as early as 1647 when people began to realize the possibility of there being other intelligent beings out there in the universe which was subject to growing interest in those very years. In the works of John Milton, Paradise Lost, there was a notion of the concept when the angel discusses with man the possibility of life on the moon.
The phrase may have been concocted by the many famed movie makers and writers for it instills fear and curiosity that the words “Take me to your leader” has been so much a part of most science fiction films that deal with aliens and the supernatural. Scientists are just beginning to study the possibility of sentient life on other planets like the earth amidst the billions of stars that are in the universe. There may indeed be such life though not in the forms and shapes we expect them. SETI has been constantly working to find signs of such intelligent life feom space by listening through large radio telescopes for signals that may have meaning. Though no solid facts have been ironed out, the mere statistics of the universe and the many other stars which may have such planets as the earth is a truly enticing idea indeed.
The Day The Earth Stood Still

Another remake of a classic, the movie has aliens and machines that are meant to destroy the earth using alien technology far advanced than what we have on earth. Though greatly expanded on, the movie has environmentally conscious beings who travel to earth bringing with them technology we can only dream of. Curiosity is quickly turned to fear as that technology turns against us disintegrating anything on contact. The original story had humongous giants sent to earth to kill everything that moves. Klaatu played by Keanu Reeves, is an alien who is dressed as a human sent to study the people and culture of this earth trying to study and learn as much as he can. Gort is an indestructible alien which does all the destroying takes clues from Klaatu as to what to do, created to patrol the universe to keep the peace. Klaatu dies in the end but not after passing down the words “Klaatu Barada Nichto” which is to be spoken to Gort to stop him from killing off the human race.
