dirty-harry.jpgOne of the memorable quotes that have risen from the movies by Clint Eastwood, a tough cop who had little respect for those who broke the law. He used an iron fist (actually a Smith and Wesson Magnum .44 Caliber Handgun) to show the bad guys he was the boss and that all who broke the law were to be subject to his form of law. Police Inspector Harry Callahan, who through his many unorthodox exploits ends up dealing with the bad guy in his own brutal way. Many see his approach to police work as brutal but he has become an icon of the hard arm of the law.

brave.jpgThe quote comes from the speech supposedly spoken by Scottish “Brave Heart” Sir William Wallace during their epic battle with the English occupation forces who were set to conquer their land in the “War of Scottish Independence”. This movie is quite a long one but does give light to some of the darkest ages of human history when conquest was still the name of the game. In the film directed by Mel Gibson who himself plays the part of Sir William, it is considered to be one of the best spic battles in history that decided the fate of the Scots. The film has many followers and many years after the release of the film, it still inspires others to strive for freedom using the quote as their battle cry.

Comedy, everybody loves comedy

Yes, even the laugh factories have their share of famous and interesting quotes like “Yeah Baby” and “Oh Behave!”, from Austin Powers. Forrest Gump produced ” Mama always said life is like a box of chocolates…”, in the film with the same name as the character played by Tom Hanks became a sort of expression for an innocent look at life from the view of a special person. A stint of comedy in the action thriller film Airplane has the quick-witted stewardess going on the intercom saying, ‘There’s no reason to be alarmed, and we hope you enjoy the rest of your flight. By the way, is there anyone here who knows how to fly a plane????”. Ace Ventura left us with, “If I’m not back in five minutes..Wait a little bit longer!!!”. Funny and hilarious they may be they do serve a purpose, to break the ice in an already hilarious film making it even more hilarious sending you crunching your stomach as it aches from laughing.

Top Gun

topgone.jpgBased on the fast life of Navy Pilots who fly some of the most sophisticated aircraft in the world, whizzing around in the skies at more than twice the speed of sound, the quote “I feel the need for Speed”, is at home in these skies. Though the film was a box office hit, there was little similarities between the action sequences and true life Top Guns in Fightertown USA at Miramar Air Station in San Diego California where the best of the best pilots from all branches who are considered to be in the top 1% of all pilots. The stunts the lead character did were considered to be grounds for a court martial, jail time and dismissal from the Navy and were purely for show.

Planet of the Apes

November 13th, 2009

aplanet2.jpgaplanet1.jpgThe Movie has two versions, the original from 1968 with another release in 2001. The movie tells the fictional story of a deep space mission that unexpectedly lands in a black hole to a planet where Apes evolved into the superior species and humans were the animals. The movie has the men trying to get back home but before doing so getting the apes to recognize the people whom they treated as pets and slaves their freedom and rights to subsist along sides each other. The Original movie had the famous quote spoken by the human when he was captured by the apes speaking “Get your stinking paws off me. You dirty ape.” which was reversed on the revived version to “Get your dirty hands off me. You dirty Human”. The story ends with the chimpanzee they launched as part of their experiments landing in the same planet showing the apes and men that in their world the roles were reversed.

Scarface

September 17th, 2009

scarface.jpgAl Pacino as the Cuban refugee who was seeking asylum in the United States when Fidel emptied all his jails all at the same time in the historic event that is now known as the “Mariel Boatlift”. Under suspicion from US immigration he is detained and sent to a prison camp for Cubans due to suspected politically motivated activities. Set free, he joins his old time friend and becomes one of the most notorious cocaine dealers in the US. In the movie’s climax, when Al’s house was being stormed by assassins out to kill him, he manages to get hold of an M16-rilfe with a grenade launcher yells “Say Hello to my little friend”, blows the door open and peppers the bad guys. He is shot in the back with a shotgun and the film ends with him floating in the pool below to which he fell after being shot, dead. That quote, earned the 61st. place in the AFI’s 100 films 100years. The film received much criticism due to many gruesome scenes and the repeated use of foul language. It also took three reviews for release by the MPAA which categorized it as rated “X” due to the extreme violence and language, De Palma agreed to re-edit the film twice, ending up releasing the unedited version marked as the one approved for “R”.

Apollo 13

August 13th, 2009

apollo13.jpgWell, we all know the story and the famous quote, “Houston, We have a Problem” stood out among the other facts the movie has become to be known. First of all, that tag line was voted to be #50 of the Greatest Movie Quotes in 100 years By the American Film Institute and has also influenced pop culture referring to something planned to be good which turns out to become a nightmare. It’s hailed as one of the most technically accurate Space movie of all time with regards to the Apollo Space Program with many of the dramatics in he movie added to create a lively storyline. The dialogues of the astronauts and ground control were based on actual transcripts obtained from the Space Program Archives (the quote wasn’t in there making it truly a product of the film). Some argued that there were many inconsistencies in the film, like the falling of Mrs. Lovell’s wedding ring falling into the sink drain which critics say was just to add drama. This was counteracted by both Mr. and Mrs. Lovell and stated that it did indeed happen which is found in the DVD version interview and was also mentioned in he book by Jim Lovell, “Lost Moon”.

A Few Good Men

July 9th, 2009

afew.jpgThe movie gave birth to the quote, “You can’t handle the truth!!!”, which was spoken by Col. Nathan Jessep, the commanding officer of Guantanamo Bay Naval Base and a nominee to become the chief of Naval Operations in the Pentagon, who was put to the stand in an investigation into the death of one of the Marines under his command. The said marine was given a “Code Red” which was a made up term for extrajudicial punishment which ended in his death resulting in the trial that had his fellow marines and superior officers under investigation for the said death. The main characters of the film were two lawyers, one of whom was the son of a decorated Navy lawyer holding the position of Attorney General and Navy Judge Advocate. The quote comes from a last ditch effort from the two main characters into getting the commanding officer to admit his role (which was authorizing the Code Red on the Marine who died) in the said killing ending up angering him and saying those famous words.

Note: All of the events in the film were fictional and there are no such terms and disciplinary actions within the said branch of military service.

Disney vs. Pixar on Wall-E

August 16th, 2008

The outline for Wall-E looks somewhat like this: “Disney and Pixar join forces for this computer-animated tale about a wide-eyed robot that travels to the deepest reaches of outer space in search of a newfound friend.” The year is 2700, and planet Earth has long been uninhabitable. For hundreds of years, WALL-E (Waste Allocation Load Lifter Earth-Class) has been taking out the trash, and collecting precious knick-knacks in order to stave off the monotony of his dreary routine. Little does WALL-E realize that he has recently stumbled onto a secret that could save planet Earth, and once again make the ravaged planet safe for all humanity. When highly advanced search robot EVE makes friends with WALL-E and realizes the value of his remarkable discovery, she excitedly races back to let the humans know that there’s hope for their home planet after all. But after centuries alone in the world, WALL-E can’t stand the thought of losing the only friend he’s ever known, and eagerly follows her into the deepest reaches of space on the adventure of a lifetime. Along the way, the friendly trash-collecting robot who has always known what he was made for gradually begins to understand what he was meant for.

This is the most excellent film of 2008 so far, and if Wall-E doesn’t get listed for Best Picture (not just the cheap cop-out Best Animated Picture) then I’m going to throw a total fit. This is a beautiful, smart, touching, hilarious and damn cute movie that I’m going to see at least 4 more times in the theatre. It is the best film Pixar has ever made in my opinion… and the most complete one too. I appreciated this movie.

Fight Club, 1999

“The condom is the glass slipper of our generation. You slip one on when you meet a stranger, you dance all night, then you throw it away… the condom, I mean, not the stranger.”

A film of all sorts – psychological, thriller, suspense, drama, and comedy – Fight Club unleashes actors Edward Norton’s and Brad Pitt’s best performance together. Brad Pitt (Tyler Durden) depicts the character of this really persuasive, know-it-all guy, stunning Edward Norton (The Narrator) who has problems of his own. Pitt and Norton form an exclusive underground group of purely men wherein they engage in hitting each other and are the cause of pain to each other. They do this to vent their anger and at the same time, develop strong friendships with one another. This movie speaks a lot about the modern world, a lot about people, and a lot about life.
